College of humanities and sciences (CHS)
Case Competition 2023
Solutions for Tomorrow
Message from Co-Deans
To all NUS students
We created the NUS College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) to deliver an interdisciplinary curriculum that empowers our students to tackle some of the world’s complex problems.
Now, we present to you the CHS Case Competition Series. Take a real-world case that impacts your future and Singapore’s future, team up (or join the competition as an individual) and formulate solutions organically, with inputs and guidance from NUS faculty members and industry experts. And watch as your intellectual pursuits are turned into reality by stakeholders of the case problem.
We wish you lots of fun and self-discovery in this meaningful endeavour.
Why participate?
The interdisciplinary curriculum of the College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) is designed to enable students to tackle complex problems that require knowledge and skills from diverse fields.
The CHS Case Competition Series is a platform for students to apply curriculum learning to formulate solutions for real-world issues that require an interdisciplinary approach.
You will practice evaluating the width and depth of the problem statement, drawing from the expertise of team members from different disciplines. You and/or your team will develop solutions organically, in recognition of the fluid and complex nature of the problem. You will learn how to communicate effectively amongst team members, integrate individual contributions and collaborate for solutions. You will also have the opportunity to practice delivering clear, concise and articulate presentations of your findings to stakeholders.
Problem statement
Due to easy access to cyber technology over the last two decades or so, many Singaporeans have developed an unhealthy dependency to their internet devices such as computers and smartphones. This screen dependency was worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic; the e-Conomy SEA 2020 report revealed that Singaporeans spent more time online due to the pandemic, from an average of 3.6 hours spent online per day pre-pandemic to 4.1 hours post-pandemic.
Your task is to propose ONE revolutionary, yet feasible solution to treat Singaporeans’ screen dependency, and in particular, game / social media dependency, for youths and adults.
The proposed solution could be based on technology, policy, education or something else. The keywords are “revolutionary” and “feasible”. The proposal should not exceed 2,000 words. It should be written in prose that is clear and concise.
Competition Format
Eligibility:
The competition is open to NUS students from all courses of study.
Requirements:
Participate either as a team or solo. You are free to add or change team members throughout the duration of the case competition and there is no cap on the number of team members. All team members should be current NUS students AND at least one team member should be a CHS student.
Preliminary round:
Create a compelling case of no more than 2,000 words. Where appropriate, use infographics to support your arguments. The case will be evaluated by a panel of NUS Faculty members. In evaluating the proposals, the judges will look for ingenuity, impact and feasibility. Solutions that are revolutionary and at the same time supported by research, facts and statistics, and rigorously argued, will be favourably considered.
Final round:
Up to 10 finalists will present their cases on-stage in no more than 10 minutes with visual aids. The judges will comprise member(s) of NUS Faculties and representatives from competition partners. The presentations will be evaluated based on content and delivery.
Prizes:
The top three teams will receive cash prizes of SGD1,500, SGD1,000 and SGD500.
The 10 finalists will each receive USD1,000 Alibaba Cloud Computing credits and an SGD60 F&B voucher.
