Job Description
The National University of Singapore (NUS) launched the College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) in August 2021, an enhanced undergraduate experience for students of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and the Faculty of Science (FoS). CHS includes a Common Curriculum of 13 courses that provide foundational skills in literacy, numeracy and critical thinking, as well as broad exposure to Humanities, Social Sciences and Asian Studies.
The successful candidate will be part of the teaching team offering the CHS Integrated Social Sciences course and will be housed under the Department of Philosophy. The anticipated start date is July 2024. The appointment is for a period of 1-2 years with the possibility of extension.
Responsibilities
- Conduct tutorials (discussion groups) and support students via email, office hours.
- Provide administrative support and assist in the day to day running of the module.
- Prepare educational resources and course materials.
- Evaluate module assessment components.
- Teach up to 240 contact hours per academic year.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s or Masters’ degree in a relevant discipline.
- Candidates must have excellent verbal, reading, and written skills, and be able to explain difficult concepts clearly.
- Be able to work well independently, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team with diverse interests and opinions.
- Strong interest in continued engagement with a variety of humanities and non-humanities disciplines, as well as pedagogical improvement.
- Strong ability to facilitate discussions for undergraduate students.
- Past teaching and facilitation experience (especially at the university level) with good student feedback will put candidates in a strong standing.

- Abridged CV (5-page max): including details on education, employment history, past experience of teaching and supervision, research activities (including publications) and achievements, honours and awards, and service accomplishments.
- Qualifications: Scanned copies of academic degrees.
- Teaching Portfolio:
- Teaching Statement that commences with a preface (max 300 words) that makes the case for appointment. This should be a highly distilled summary of key contributions to student learning and, if applicable, educational leadership, guided by key points from the candidate’s teaching philosophy. The rest of the Statement should focus on outlining the teaching philosophy, providing evidence of strong commitment to education and learning, innovation and leadership in teaching (if applicable), and future pedagogical plans.
- Teaching evaluations and peer review reports, if available. Other evidence of teaching excellence and/or contributions, e.g., curriculum development, pedagogical innovation etc., should also be provided.
- Research Statement, if applicable, highlighting how a candidate plans to advance pedagogical and/or disciplinary knowledge through inquiry. Note that the Teaching and Research statements combined should be no more than a maximum of 2000 words.
- THREE referees’ letters (one of whom must be the applicant’s MA/PhD supervisor, if applicable).

CHS Graduate Teaching Fellowships (for FASS graduate students)
CHS seeks MA and PhD candidates in NUS who will join the teaching team offering the CHS Integrated Asian Studies course as a Graduate Student Teaching Assistant.
The anticipated start date is July 2024. For matriculating students, the start date is August 2024. Successful candidates will be given a Graduate Teaching Fellowship for a period of 1 year (2 semesters) with the possibility of extension.
Typically, Masters GTF recipients receive a monthly pay of $2700* whereas PhD recipients get $3150*.
PhD students will receive up to 4 years of GTF, subject to satisfactory teaching performance.
Masters students will receive up to 2 years of GTF, subject to satisfactory teaching performance.
*Amount may vary depending on your matriculation year.
Responsibilities
- Teach up to 96 contact hours per academic year by conducting tutorial discussion groups. (Each tutorial group consists of around 20 students meet 5 times in a semester for 2-hr sessions fortnightly.)
- Support students via email and office hours.
- Prepare educational resources and course materials as needed for tutorials, but also for shared components used by all tutors (e.g., share in setting quizzes).
- Evaluate course assessment components under the responsibility of tutors.
- Keep accurate records and provide other administrative support relating to the running of the course as required for tutors.
Required Qualifications / Skills
- Enrolment in an NUS Master’s or PhD program preferably in an Asian Studies Department. Candidates from Humanities or Social Science disciplines may be considered on a case by case basis.
- Excellent verbal, reading, and written skills; ability to explain difficult concepts clearly.
- Strong ability to facilitate discussions for undergraduate students.
- Ability to work well both independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team with diverse interests and opinions.
- Strong interest in continued engagement with a variety of disciplines pertinent to Asian Studies, as well as pedagogical improvement.
- Past teaching and facilitation experience (especially at the university level) with good student feedback will put candidates in a strong standing.

- New applicants to FASS graduate programs, current FASS graduate students without funding, and current FASS graduate students holding GTFs are eligible to apply (for the last group, the department and supervisor will need to concur for the appointment to proceed).
- (Current FASS graduate students holding the Research Scholarship are not eligible to apply; however, they may claim GAP hours if approved by the department and supervisor to teach for the course, with the agreement of the HSA teaching team leaders.)

About HSH1000 The Human Condition
Course Description:
What is the essence of being human? Across intellectual traditions of the world, fundamental concerns relating to the triumphs and problems of social organization and what a worthwhile life is have persisted through the changing circumstances of every historical age. This course introduces you to some of these enduring concerns and gives you the opportunity to engage critically with them through reading and discussing texts and other media. In the process, you develop an appreciation for the complexities of being human as you practice and sharpen useful and transferable critical thinking skills that are useful in a variety of contexts.
Learning outcomes:
- Students will become more aware about issues relating to our individual and collective experience;
- They will appreciate the nuances of textual communication;
- They will gain critical thinking skills needed to process qualitative information;
- They will become more sensitive to the historical aspects of human experience.
