Asian Studies
Asian Interconnections
NUS is recognised as a global centre of excellence in Asian Studies. At CHS, a multidisciplinary and comparative approach to the study of Asia and its regions will be adopted. The array of modular offerings at the Departments of Chinese Studies; Japanese Studies; Malay Studies; Southeast Asian Studies; and the South Asian Studies Programme will expose students to the issues and challenges that affect Asian societies such as ethnic and religious diversity, colonial histories, migration and social inequalities. Collectively, the Asian Studies division emphasises experiential learning through field studies and will equip students at CHS with the conceptual tools, and the critical skills necessary for a deep appreciation of Asia’s social, political and cultural diversity.

Foreign Language Studies: Passport to the World
In today’s world of growing globalisation and internationalisation where cross-cultural encounters and interactions are expected, the integration of knowledge and skills into the studies of foreign language and culture is an essential asset for individuals to thrive personally and professionally. The NUS Centre for Language Studies was established in 2001 to serve the foreign language needs of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and has today more than 80 full-time and part-time faculty members. It teaches thirteen different languages – Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Spanish, Tamil, Thai and Vietnamese – to more than 3,300 students per semester and thus helps them acquire a very valuable economic and social resource in today's world. Having produced numerous teaching award winners in recent years, the Centre is firmly committed to excellence in teaching and seeks to maintain, and improve, its high teaching standards by engaging in research and facilitating professional development in foreign language teaching. In our panel, we will also talk about the Minor in Language Studies and Proficiency certificates, which are very much sought after by students looking to enhance their career prospects.
