Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing recently spoke on the changing world after the pandemic and the importance of education, research and academic leadership to meet societal, economic and technological challenges.

Research is a key area to help overcome or even pre-empt some of our challenges by generating new insights, ideas and solutions. Minister Chan said, “COVID-19 has highlighted how critical it is for us to have interdisciplinary research where collaborations across different disciplines enable us to solve complex problems.”

Likewise, interdisciplinary learning provides students broad intellectual foundations and the ability to integrate knowledge across different disciplines. This better prepares them to solve complex problems that arise in the VUCA (Volatile. Uncertain. Complex. Ambiguous.) world.

Minister Chan said, “Moving forward, interdisciplinary education, in particular, will be especially important to ensure our students are well-equipped for the future economy.”
