Scientific Inquiry I

HSI1000 How Science Works, Why Science Works

What is Science? How does it work? Why does it work? Not only will this course help answer these questions, but it will also hone the skills needed to negotiate a world in the post-truth era. These skills derive from the scientific method; the characteristic of modern science that has made it without a doubt the most successful endeavour in human history. These questions and these skills will be woven within a rich history of scientific accomplishment, culminating in an understanding of the frightening challenges we face to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss.

SP2274 Engineering a Lifelike Cell

This course introduces students to the possibility of constructing the smallest unit of life, the cell. Using the central question, what are the minimum components and processes required to build an artificial living cell from scratch, students will explore how the fundamental chemical and physical principles underlying several biological processes enable cells to integrate and function as an autonomous machine; to self-replicate, self-assemble, self-repair and reprogramme in response to changes in the environment.

Notes:

    • This course is open to all CHS students and fulfils the CHS Scientific Inquiry I requirement.
    • This course is mandatory for those already in the Special Programme in Science.
