With an open mind and open heart

Creating value-driven care and managing health performances, you might be surprised to learn that Charlotte LOKE (Class of 2021), an Executive at Woodlands Health, majored in Chemistry and minored in Geosciences.

Since junior college, Charlotte has had an interest in chemistry and geography, seeing the two disciplines as tightly related. The combination allowed her to see the real-life applications of chemistry in areas such as sustainable chemistry.

Through her studies, she acquired not only valuable research skills but also soft skills such as interpersonal communication, particularly in multidisciplinary teams, as well as an open mind to see things from various perspectives.

“These translate to me having more confidence in my abilities to deliver in my area of work,” explains Charlotte.

It was this confidence that enabled Charlotte to venture into a career in public health, one which is not immediately related to her field of studies.

And the transferable skills she gained at school have come in useful in more ways than one. Recalling how she had to draw on diverse knowledge and viewpoints to oversee incident management operations of a COVID-19 treatment facility during the pandemic, Charlotte adds, “It was fulfilling to be part of a nationwide effort to manage and optimise healthcare resources.”

Keeping an open mind and open heart, Charlotte hopes to pursue further studies in public health in the future.
