Year 3 College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) student Daphne WONG is venturing to Europe for the first time. The allure of exploring new destinations fuelled her desire for adventure.

Currently on exchange at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Daphne was drawn to Finland because of its renowned education system, which prioritises holistic learning over examination-centric approaches, and its consistent ranking as the world's happiest country, which further piqued her interest. She is reading double majors in Data Science and Analytics, and Innovation and Design, and a minor in Community Development and Leadership.

Access to specialised courses unavailable at NUS and case studies from her professors allow her to delve deeper into her academic interests and expand her understanding of complex issues, while studying in a different cultural context gives her fresh insights into global phenomena.

She says, “Academically, adapting to new teaching styles, while challenging initially, continues to expand my intellectual horizons.”

She adds, “Collaborating with classmates from diverse backgrounds also facilitates the mutual exchange of knowledge, enabling me to learn from, and contribute to our collective academic journey.”

Daphne participates actively in activities organised by the MATRIX International Group, which caters to students studying mathematical sciences. These events range from casual movie nights and ice skating sessions to relaxed hangouts. A visit to a karaoke bar during orientation week, where both local and international students bonded over music and drinks, was a standout moment for her.

Equally memorable for her - an excursion to the Fazer Experience Visitor Centre, where she joined a guided tour that provided an overview of Fazer's operations, including its extensive product range, rich history, commitment to sustainability and innovative practices.  She says, “This experience was highly insightful for my second major, offering practical insights into real-world applications and industry practices.”

Being away from familiar support systems presents  Daphne myriad opportunities for growth. Managing daily tasks such as paying rent, cooking and facing up to unexpected challenges are some of the challenges which foster self-reliance. She has also developed a keen awareness of financial management, to manage her expenses.

She also encounters cultural disparities, especially in understanding practical aspects like Finland’s transportation system, where bus stops often share identical names - a departure from Singapore's conventions. Additional challenges include deciphering social norms and grappling with communication styles and everyday customs.

While living and studying in an unfamiliar environment can be daunting, Daphne is looking forward to developing important life skills such as adaptability, resilience and independence.

She says, “The experience is a catalyst for introspection and self-discovery. Through reflection and venturing into the unknown, I continue to gain valuable insights into my values, strengths  and areas for personal growth.”
