With data analytics, we can study economic decisions that people and leaders make using data science, with a precision like never before.

The specialty of the College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS)’ Data Science and Economics Cross-Disciplinary Programme (DSE-XDP) is that students are trained to tightly integrate knowledge from the two disciplines. They get to experience how to apply data science methods to analyse and build predictive models using real-world data from various sectors, to understand economic growth.

YOUNG Zhan Heng, from the inaugural College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) cohort, has done just that. He and his team worked on real data from the Housing & Development Board (HDB). They used machine learning to develop a model to predict housing prices, which they tested against historical transaction data, with +/- 10% accuracy! In another project, he applied data analytics and came up with a model to predict the likelihood of consumers defaulting on credit

The four-year DSE-XDP is the first of its kind in Singapore to integrate knowledge across the disciplines of data science and economics.
