What can NUS students expect from the new and enhanced General Education (GE) component of their university education from now on?

In line with keeping an NUS education relevant to the rapidly changing work environment of the 21st century, NUS has reformed the existing GE curriculum to include three new pillars, including Communities and Engagement, Data Literacy, and Digital Literacy.

Encouraging students to engage with and contribute to the community in meaningful partnerships, the Communities and Engagement pillar will provide opportunities for students to use innovative and interdisciplinary perspectives to understand and solve community problems.

The Data Literacy and Digital Literacy pillars, both grouped under “21st Century Competencies”, will equip students with the fundamentals to face the challenges of an increasingly data-driven and technology-centric world in the future. The former will hone students’ ability to collect, analyse, and interpret data and transform it into actionable knowledge and practices, while the latter aims to teach students to use computational tools to analyse and solve problems in various disciplines and contexts.

Listen in as NUS Senior Vice Provost (Undergraduate Education) and Shaw Professor in Information Systems and Analytics, Professor Bernard Tan, shares about these upcoming enhancements to the NUS GE curriculum with Dr Dujeepa Samarasekera, Director of the NUS Centre for Development of Teaching and Learning (CDTL).

This is the fifth instalment of CDTL’s Teaching Connections Podcasts – a series launched in conjunction with the anniversary of Teaching Connections, CDTL’s e-platform for the NUS community to advance discussions about teaching and share effective pedagogical practices and innovative ideas.
