Jason Yeo

Assoc Prof Yeo received his BSc (Hons) and MSc in Chemistry from NUS and his PhD from ETH Zurich, Switzerland and conducted postdoctoral research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His work focuses on developing efficient and robust materials to catalyse energy conversion reactions to achieve sustainable and environmentally friendly energy. Assoc Prof Yeo has received multiple university- and faculty-level teaching excellence awards. He is currently Deputy Head (Education) at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science.

Vik Gopal

Assoc Prof Gopal graduated from NUS Mathematics and went on to complete his PhD in Statistics at the University of Florida, United States. He worked at the Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies (CSIT) and then IBM, before joining NUS in 2013. He has been teaching classes in statistics and data science to undergraduates and adult learners since then. He is currently Assistant Head at the Department of Statistics and Data Science, Faculty of Science.

Liu Chunchun

Dr Liu is an experienced educator in multidisciplinary courses. Her teaching areas include economics (microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, mathematical economics, international finance, game theory), mathematics, quantitative finance and business. As an economist and applied mathematician, her research interests include applied game theory, applied microeconomic theory, applied mechanism design, industrial organisation and platform economy. She is currently a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science.

Denis Tkachenko

Denis Tkachenko

Dr Tkachenko’s research focuses on theoretical econometrics and its applications in macroeconomics and finance. His work has been published in the top five and top field economic journals. At NUS, he teaches classes in econometrics, forecasting and machine learning. He is currently a senior lecturer at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Making a Difference Through Environmental Studies

Peter Todd

Assoc Prof Todd, a marine biologist, has been teaching ecology and marine science at NUS for nearly two decades. His interdisciplinary research synthesises elements of biology, geography and engineering to answer ecological and environmental questions. In particular, he studies tropical coastal organisms and communities and the effects urbanisation has on them. He is the Director of the Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) programme.

Susan Owen

Dr Owen is an environmental policy researcher and educator who works with physical and social science research to better understand the limitations in environmental management practice. With a focus on climate adaptation policy in the context of environmental and human systems, she is interested in how we respond to the complex, and at times seemingly intractable, issues faced when developing policy to support sectoral adaptation to climate change. She currently a senior lecturer in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and concurrently the Deputy Director of the BES programme.

Liu Mei Hui

Dr Liu graduated from the pioneering batch of NUS’ Food Science and Technology Programme. She received numerous food industry awards as a student. Following her first degree, Dr Liu was awarded the prestigious Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Graduate Scholarship to pursue a PhD in Molecular Biology. Her research work at the Genome Institute of Singapore, A*STAR and Cornell University, United States brought her on many scientific journeys in the fields of molecular biology, nutrition and genomics. Her multidisciplinary research has been recognised in prestigious journals including Nature. She is currently a senior lecturer at the Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Science.

One Major, Two Specialisations, Diverse Disciplines

Henry Mok

Assoc Prof Mok obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, in 1996 on the study of folding and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of the DNA binding domain of the human papillomavirus E2 protein. His expertise is in determining the structural / functional relationship of proteins involved in human diseases using both NMR and X-ray crystallography. His group is currently investigating the interaction of human plasmin with the E-protein of the dengue virus. Assoc Prof Mok is currently Deputy Head (Undergraduate Matters) at the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science.

Victor Tan

Assoc Prof Tan received his BSc from NUS and PhD from the University of California. His research interests are in algebra and number theory. He is also a Fellow of the NUS Teaching Academy. As President of the Singapore Mathematical Society, he has organised a wide range of mathematics enrichment programmes for school teachers and students. He has received multiple faculty- and university-level awards for teaching excellence, including the Outstanding Educator Award, the highest recognition for educators at NUS. Assoc Prof Tan is currently Deputy Head (Teaching) at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science.

Dr
Li Wei

Dr Li Wei a holds a PhD in Mathematics from NUS. She has made substantial contributions to both teaching and research. Her expertise encompasses areas such as quantitative finance, game theory and discrete structures. She is recognised for her dedication to education and has been honoured with the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. Currently, she is a senior lecturer and concurrently Director of the Quantitative Finance Programme at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science.

Bertrand Sim

Dr Sim specialises in quantitative finance, integrating mathematics, statistics, computing and finance. In his teaching, he brings together these disciplines, such as the use of simulations to assess financial risk management, computer algorithms to implement financial models and mathematical tools to price financial products. He is currently a Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science.

Charmaine Sia

Dr Sia previously taught at New York University, United States, before joining NUS. At NUS, she teaches courses in pure mathematics and quantitative finance. Her research interest is in algebraic topology. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science.

NUS Pharmaceutical Science: Integrating the Chemistry, Biology and Technology of Medicines

Eric Chan

Prof Chan is the inaugural Provost’s Innovation Chair Professor (2025) at NUS. His research interests are physiologically-based pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modelling of pharmacology and toxicology, xenobiotic-derived reactive metabolite research with specific focus on interaction with biological proteins and metabolism-driven systems biology modelling of pathology, pharmacology, toxicology and mammalian host-bacteria interactions. He received the Dean’s Chair Professorship (2015 to 2018), Young Scientist Award (2010) and Outstanding Scientist Award (2014) in the Faculty of Science. He is also a recipient of multiple university- and faculty-level teaching excellence awards. He is a pharmaceutical scientist and pharmacist at the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Science.

Christina Chai

Prof Chai obtained her BSc (Hons) from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and her PhD from the Australian National University, Australia. Following her PhD, she was awarded a Violette and Samuel Glasstone Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, where she studied bioorganic reaction mechanisms. This was followed by faculty positions at Victoria University of Wellington and the Australian National University. Prof Chai was a Principal Scientist and Programme Manager at the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) (2004 to 2011) and was co-appointed Director of Graduate Affairs at A*STAR’s Science and Engineering Research Council (2008 to 2011). She joined NUS in 2011 and was Head of NUS’ Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Science, from 2016 to 2024.

Ho Han Kiat

Assoc Prof Ho received his Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) along with the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal and Chalmers Medal as the top graduate. Following which, he became one of the pioneer recipients of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Overseas Graduate Scholarship and obtained his PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Washington, United States. In 2009, he started his own research programme in NUS, exploring various aspects of liver diseases, including the management of drug-induced liver toxicity, liver fibrosis and liver cancer. In recent years, he also interfaced the use of nanomaterials to explore the impact on liver regeneration as well as in nanotoxicology. He has published more than 100 papers in internationally recognised journals and has won multiple university-level teaching excellence awards. He was also recognised for his research with the Distinguished Alumni Award for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (2020), conferred by the University of Washington. He is the Vice President of the Toxicology Society of Singapore and editorial advisory board member of Biochemical Pharmacology and Current Opinion in Toxicology. He has also been a diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology since 2018. He is the Dean of Students at NUS and concurrently academic staff of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Science.

Assoc Prof Wang is currently Deputy Head (Education) at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science.

His final year project explores ribosomal alterations in cancer. He is interested in applying analytics to drive progress in the pharmaceutical sector.

More Than a Degree
Join Jonathan as he brings you on a journey through the Pharmaceutical Science (PHS) Programme. From his undergraduate journey, Jonathan reflects on how he navigated various challenges and opportunities in the programme to build scientific depth and unique perspectives. Through experiences such as internships, overseas exchange, interdisciplinary study and residential college life, he will show how PHS is not just for academic training but also for finding one’s direction in a complex world.


Jonathan is a final year undergraduate in the Pharmaceutical Science programme. He took on an industry internship at the NUS Clinical Imaging Research Centre and completed a Student Exchange Programme at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. In addition, he pursued a second minor in Political Science and was part of the University Town College Programme at Tembusu College.
